Jewellery Storage, Cleaning & Care - Treating Your Family Heirlooms Right!

Spring is the season of new beginnings! Fresh buds bloom, animals come out of hibernation and the earth seems to come alive again! Many of us start to think about spring cleaning in March, why not add your jewellery collection to the list this year!

Nowadays there are a lot more options offered to organize your jewellery than the old faithful jewellery box. From jewellery trees to wall-mounted cabinet armoires it is easy to arrange your treasured pieces. There are DIY cleaning tools available and new lines of jewellery presented as spring is sprung!

Jewellery Organizing Options

We’ve put together some unique and handy ideas for keeping your jewellery organized and of course when it comes to the cleaning aspect, we offer on-site cleaning & inspections!

Jewellery Cleaning Tips

It is important to keep up with cleaning your jewellery as dirty, unkempt jewelry can be a safe haven for bacteria, this can lead to skin irritation, discoloration and degradation of the metals. Dirt and debris can also lead to gemstones becoming scratched.

At Austen Jewellers we offer free professional cleaning on any purchase made!

However, if you are in a bind here are a few on-the-spot cleaning hacks you can perform at home to keep your jewellery in tip-top shape!

  • Rings - Create a mixture of a few drops of Dawn dish detergent in warm water. Let the piece sit in the solution for a few minutes, then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rinse the item in a new container of lukewarm water and set to dry on a clean paper towel.

  • Necklace’s -  Grab that Dawn again! Soak your necklace for at least 15-minutes in a few drops mixed into warm water. Rinse your necklace using clean, cool water immediately after and layout over a clean paper towel and pat dry with a clean cloth.

  • Watches - Check out this video and learn how to clean all types of watches. Remember tho, after you had a battery replaced in your watch, your watch is NO LONGER water-resistant & we do not suggest wearing this in the water!

Keeping Your Jewellery Safe at Home

Jewellery is often extremely important to us whether it is an heirloom, a present or a reward we gifted ourselves, we truly treasure these pieces. Did you know even at home jewellery can get broken or lost?

Here are some tips and tricks to keeping your jewellery guarded:

  • Remove rings before washing hands or doing dishes - a jewellery tree can come in handy here!

  • Remove your jewellery while you sleep - your jewellery is crushed, yanked and stretched while you sleep this causes undue stress and wear and tear.

  • Be mindful of children and pets - children may see jewellery as a toy and yank or put it in their mouth. Pets such as dogs may jump up and get caught in necklaces causing them to break.

  • Keep jewellery in designated organizers

  • Get jewellery insurance

Of course, sometimes life just happens and jewellery gets broken. If this happens remember, we are here for you! At Austen Jewellers we offer on-site repairs.
